General Information About Anshi Dandeli Tiger Reserve

Situated at the border of Karnataka and Goa, Anshi Dandeli Tiger Reserve gets its name from the small village of Dandeli in Karnataka. The Anshi Dandeli Tiger Reserve is located in the Uttara Kannda district of the state near the Dandeli forest, overlooking the Kali river.

Anshi Dandeli Tiger Reserve has a history dating back to the days of British rule in India. At that time the population of tigers in the forest had become unchecked and some of those solemn beasts had also turned into man-eaters creating a lot of havoc and fear in the nearby villages. The British government thus declared a reward to be given to anyone who managed to kill a tiger. Hence, many cubs were exterminated to control the growing tiger population. Ironically and unfortunately, at present there are only 13 tigers left in the region due to the brutal execution.

This led to the formation of Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary which came into existence in the year 1956. Also, in the year 1987, Anshi National Park was established for ensuring the protection of the regional wildlife, constituting and in addition to, the then presently left number of tigers. There are in all 45 elephants inhabiting the National Park and interestingly they are not the original inhabitants of the region. As it happens they migrated to Dandeli forest from Mysore, a long time back and since for some unknown reason they couldn’t return, ended up making the area their permanent home.
The Anshi Dandeli Tiger Reserve is formed by the amalgamation of Anshi National park and Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary. It was declared a Tiger reserve in the year 2007. Together with 6 different protected areas lying adjacent to each other and spread across the states of Goa and Maharashtra, the Anshi Dandeli Tiger Reserve is an expansive reserve comprising a massive area of 2,200 km.

Spread over many mountain ranges, the reserve unfurls a panoramic vista of breath taking natural beauty with each mountain displaying a wholly different picture. Blessed with unmatched diversity in flora and fauna, the place embarks serenity in every inch of its land. Besides plunging you into an enchanting view, river Kali also offers you with many exciting water sports that you can indulge in here.
